About this Site:
The aim of this website is to act as an aid to someone who has little or no experience of carving and it was designed as a resource for students and teachers of second level education. The main benefit of the site are the video tutorials taking a beginner carver through the basics principles of using the tools and the various styles of carving.

This style of cut is a good place to begin, it is suitable for boarders and can be readily intergrated into chip carving designs. This pattern also offer great potential for the stab knife features.
Cutting Straight Lines Freehand:

Hold the cutting knife in the first forming the tripod on the wood.

Thumb, point of the knife and knuckle of the index finger forming the tripod. This maintains a constant angle.

Lock your wrist to prevent any unwanted movement.

As you carve the straight line do not lose sight of the the target line.

Don't rush the cut and maintain and contain speed to generate to best cuts.

Correctly holding the Stab Knife:

Initially take the knife and position it in the palm of your writing hand.
