Creating your own Relief Carving Designs
Design Creation:
-
Decide on a suitable size on which to draw your pattern depending on the piece of wood being carved.
-
Begin with a piece of paper, the best way to generate ideas is to experiment with thumbnail sketches.
-
Sketch out a number of shapes similar to the outline of the shape you'll be carving. Dont measure just estimate.
-
Depending on the theme of the carving sketch out some sample ideas.
-
Having selected an approapriate design the next stage is to identify the variations in height.
-
These variations can be represented using colouring pencils. For example, red is the deepest area, with a transition to pink, orange, yellow and white.
