While relief carvings are carved on a flat surface and intended to be viewed primarily from one direction carving in the round is three dimensional and requires additional craft skills. 

 

This style of carving is generally completed all the way around and has a more 'lifelike' surface and texture. It might be a person, animal, or bird; it might be big, or small; it might be to scale or lifesize.
